A messenger of their own actually did come to them, but they denied him. So the torment overtook them while they persisted in wrongdoing.

قوله تعالى : ولقد جاءهم رسول منهم فكذبوه فأخذهم العذاب وهم ظالمون [ ص: 177 ] قوله تعالى : ولقد جاءهم رسول منهم فكذبوه هذا يدل على أنها مكة . وهو قول ابن عباس ومجاهد وقتادة .فأخذهم العذاب وهو الجوع الذي وقع بمكة . وقيل : الشدائد والجوع منها .
He has revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ the Book in truth, confirming what came before it, as He revealed the Torah and the Gospel
