He said, “I saw what they did not see, so I took a handful ˹of dust˺ from the hoof-prints of ˹the horse of˺ the messenger-angel ˹Gabriel˺ then cast it ˹on the moulded calf˺. This is what my lower-self tempted me into.”1

{ بَصُرْتُ بِمَا لَمْ يَبْصُرُوا بِهِ } وهو جبريل عليه السلام على فرس رآه وقت خروجهم من البحر، وغرق فرعون وجنوده على ما قاله المفسرون، فقبضت قبضة من أثر حافر فرسه، فنبذتها على العجل، { وَكَذَلِكَ سَوَّلَتْ لِي نَفْسِي } أن أقبضها، ثم أنبذها، فكان ما كان
He has revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ the Book in truth, confirming what came before it, as He revealed the Torah and the Gospel
