When their messengers came to them with clear proofs, they were prideful in whatever ˹worldly˺ knowledge they had,1 and were ˹ultimately˺ overwhelmed by what they used to ridicule.

Hadith
﴿فَلَمَّا جَاۤءَتۡهُمۡ رُسُلُهُم بِٱلۡبَیِّنَـٰتِ﴾ الْمُعْجِزَات الظَّاهِرَات ﴿فَرِحُوا۟﴾ أي الكفار ﴿بِمَا عِندَهُم﴾ أي الرسل ﴿مِّنَ ٱلۡعِلۡمِ﴾ فرح استهزاء وضحك مُنْكِرِينَ لَهُ ﴿وَحَاقَ﴾ نَزَلَ ﴿بِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ یَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ٨٣﴾ أي العذاب
He has revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ the Book in truth, confirming what came before it, as He revealed the Torah and the Gospel
